Natasha Chapman, flute
~ performer and teacher ~

"Natasha Chapman is an excellent music teacher. I have been her student for the past two years. Apart from her considerable experience as a professional musician, she brings a passion and caring for teaching that is inspiring. She is able to gauge instruction both to the level of expertise and the maturity of her students. I have learned so much from her teaching. She both encourages and challenges me, and my ability to play flute has developed dramatically because of her approach. I recommend her highly. Flute Lessons...
My teaching studio consists of students of all ages and abilities.  Students are encouraged to learn at their own individual paces, and can choose to involve themselves in the various exams and competitions if they wish.  Many of my students have received 1st and 2nd place prizes from the Kiwanis Music Festival. Others have taken Royal Conservatory Exams, receiving honours and above, and some have chosen to pursue music at a university level.

I currently teach at my studio in Smiths Falls (approximately 35 minutes from both Kanata and Brockville) and I also teach in the Ottawa Valley area a few times each week in the homes of my students.

Please contact me for information or with any questions.
Piano, Theory, Recorder...
I also offer lessons in piano, recorder and theory.  Beginner piano students are taught the basics of music in a positive, encouraging environment.  As a student advances, it will be my pleasure to recommend other teachers in your area who could continue to guide the development of your child/self.

Recorder is an instrument that I recommend to students who would like to play flute but aren't physically capable of reaching the keys (for example, younger students with arms not long enough).  Many who start on recorder switch to the flute as they progress.

Music theory is an integral part of musical training.  For more advanced students, the RCM system recommends more intense theory work.  Theory lessons are offered in individual classes or in a group setting if there are a few students studying at the same level.
Expectations...

Although I do not audition for entry into my studio, I do accept new students on a provisionary basis.  After about 4-5 lessons, I will  re-evaluate a students progress (attitude, willingness to practice, student/teacher "fit", and overall aptitude for the instrument) and give a verbal assesment to the student's parents.  At this time we will decide whether or not lessons should continue.

I expect my students to work well and follow a daily practice schedule. Students are required to practice 5-6 days a week.  Beginner students should be practicing 30 minutes a day, while intermediate and advanced students should be putting in 45 minutes to an hour, respectively.

I request payment at the beginning of the month for the month's lessons.  Cancellations must be received at least 24 hours prior to the lesson, or the lesson will not be made up and no money will be refunded.

Note: If you are coming for a first lesson, and have already attained some level of proficiency on the flute (ie. you are not a beginner), please have a piece prepared to play that you feel comfortable with, and reflects your level of playing.
